New linked open land use change and soil moisture data for improving greenhouse gas emission inventories

Newly developed open and linked datasets have significant potential to improve national greenhouse gas emission inventories which are required under the Kyoto Protocol. Quantifying carbon emissions from land use, land use change and forestry, and nitrous oxide from agricultural management of soils requires accurate estimates of annual land use change and the spatio-temporal variability of soil moisture, respectively. Here we show work undertaken in MELODIES to provide a novel land cover map of the UK, optimized to constrain land cover and land use change, newly recovered historical data on soil moisture and a demonstration portal for data exploration.
