Almost all ships nowadays are equipped with an Automatic Identification System (AIS), primarily to improve marine traffic safety. The AIS signals, when collected and analysed, can be put to a much wider use. Combined with model forecasts of wind, wave, and current conditions at sea a ship’s arrival time can be assessed more accurately, taking delays due to bad weather into account. We also show the potential of AIS data to produce surface current assessments, as a valuable addition to the scarce traditional sources.
